Shinjuku (新宿) is an exciting city with a plethora of activity going on all at the same time. The busiest metro station on the globe is bustling with rows of restaurants, retail stores, hotels, bars and skyscraping government buildings sprinkled all around. It is a beautiful place to explore, but don't get overwhelmed by the mega technicolour billboards! Grab a Tokyo map before starting... here's some recommendations on the places to visit and the yummy (& cute - think Bento, ramen and sushi!) food to eat!
Shinjuku Sights!
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (新宿御苑)
Sakura Season is here... it is the best time to visit Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden where 1500 cherry blossom trees come into bloom at its best. Stroll into the lush green parks English Landscape, French Formal, Japanese Traditional (with teahouse) and the curiously named Mother and Child Forest (Haha to Ko no Mori) for a tranquil time. There's also a lovely Taiwan Pavilion; go inside and look out the second-story windows.

Tip: Request for a map at the entrance from the personnel, or wander by yourself in this mesmerizing wonderland.
Tsukiji Fish Market (築地市場)
The busiest wholesale fish market in the world, Tsukiji is known as ‘the kitchen for 12 million people in Tokyo’. If you feel you are getting in the way as you wade past piles of polystyrene, crates and trollies, look out for signs to the visitors passway where you can watch the live auctions with every clanging of the bell.
Check out the famous live tuna fish auction at 5am - yes, visiting the fish market is an early affair! For the freshest fish in Shinjuku, spot the Tokyo Zanmai restaurant along one of the quaint lanes. Cozy restaurants line along the entire pavements - they look like they came straight from a Japanese drama - kawaii!

Tip: Don't wear sandals, and hold on tight to your cameras - it can get really busy!
Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office (東京都庁舎)
Lauded to be the icon of Shinjuku, Tokyo, you cannot go to Shinjuku without ascending this famous building. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office is the fourth tallest building in Japan finished in 1990. It is 296m high and thanks to special shock absorbing pillars and posts, it's fully earthquake-proof. There are two observation galleries (South and North Observatory), one in each tower at 45 floors up. Entrance is free and the panoramic view is fantastic. On a clear day, you can even Mount Fuji and even Yokohama!

Tip: Camouflaged in an urban forest like Shinjuku, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office may not be that easy to spot - consult a map first!
